The Mystery of the Red Kangaroo and a Top Secret Mission
Average: 4.9 (31 votes)

One of the most cherished treasures in my family is a red kangaroo stuffed toy. Growing up, I remember it at my grandmother’s house tucked just out of reach from my threatening toddler hands. Legend says my grandfather brought it back from a top secret mission during WWII. I never really knew the significance of this long beloved, prized possession, until now. This short video documents my journey to solve the mystery of the red kangaroo and a top secret mission.

I’ve used the plush toy and actual letters sent from my grandfather while on his mission during WWII, to create stop-motion animations, and mixed in snapshots and archival photos. Tim Kennedy created the After Effects moves on the stills and documents, as well as shot the video of the kangaroo. Maureen Barillaro consulted on the editing.

Red Kangaroo

What a treat. Loved the story, style and sentiment. Waiting for the sequel. What happens next to the red kangaroo? Keep us posted.

Legacy of war

Fantastic little video. I love how the perspective of childlike wonderment is retained throughout the piece, in the narrator’s tone when describing the secret mission in London, the feel of the stop motion. Also, I appreciate the irony of the souvenir of the “game” of war and munitions being a plushy doll in the arms of a smiling child, later coveted by her own child.

Quite a tail!

Loved the story - made me wish I had met your grandpa! Great job, very creative.

Outstanding!

Outstanding!

So great!

I loved that!

off limits roo

It's interesting how we each look at things (as a general term) and how the same thing can invoke different memories. I mainly remember "Mr Roo" to be part of Grandma's "doll collection," which was as you said pretty much off limits.
This is really cute!! Love the whole thing... the way it was done, etc. what do I know, but a Really Great Job! Hope there will be more to come
I still think you should try sneaking him into the Antiques Roadshow guys & see what kind of answers the toy guy might have.

The Mystery of the Red Kangaroo and a Top Secret Mission

Great work Caroline! What an amazing story about your grandfather. I love your use of stop motion, the paper moving into a heart was sweet :-)

What a wonderful symbol of an era gone by

I enjoyed the film for it is a reminder of the WWII generation strength of character and devotion. It was a romantic yet difficult time and I believe the film director captured this essence well. Like the constituition of the stuffed kangaroo, this generation will forever be in our hearts.

the Mystery of the Red Kangaroo

this is a fantastic use of stop-motion to tell a story.
I've been going through a lot of old stuff of my parents and this video is really representative of the kinds of emotions and reactions you encounter when you dig around in your family's past.

The Mystery of the Red Kangaroo and a Top Secret Mission

This is very well made and so sweet. I hope one day my grandchild will put that much thought into making a piece of art about me.

subterfuge

The Red Kangaroo (Macropus rufus) is the largest surviving marsupial anywhere in the world.

I wonder if he used red kangaroos to smuggle munitions across the boarder in their pouches... hmm... kangaroos aren't too suspicious in Europe...

Then the plush toy would always be a reminder of this act.
